Association 2010: Living prayer

Dear People,

One of the current favorite phrases in our house is a paraphrase of the old joke: Q: "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" A: "Practice, practice, practice." The girls get a kick out of applying it to all occasions and it occurs to me that it is especially applicable to our position as students of Christian Scientists.

How do I feel closer to God?How do I make the Bible Lesson come alive for me?How do I strengthen my faith?How do I keep the "mountaintop" sense of life we found in class?"Practice, practice, practice."

Or as Mrs. Eddy put it: "The song of Christian Science is, 'Work - work - work - watch and pray." ('00 2:7-8)

It's not an onerous or burdensome thing. Practice and the repetition of good in thought and action is an investment in our spiritual history - the manifestation of what is lasting and meaningful. It is like the gift that keeps on giving! And truly, the "work" of Christian Science is simply a commitment to life itself - real life, as Jesus promised when he said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." (John 10:10)

There are two new items in our fruitage section that illustrates this and reminds us that right where human expectation limits and condemns, divine Mind unfolds the substance of God's good. This is what is natural too us, whether we are just out of class or "experienced Christian Scientists". It is true in a cow pasture, true at home, at work and even true at church; Mind's supremacy is true regardless of so-called material conditions. God can always "furnish a tale in the wilderness" and our "work" is to stay awake and alive to this fact.

In her time, Mrs. Eddy had to contend with the very aggressive threat that both the union of her country and the place of Christianity and religion in society might be irreparably damaged or completely lost. The Civil War taught her invaluable lessons about how to work, watch and pray for a nation. Her persistent struggle to publish and preserve the revelation of Christian Science shows us all we need to know about praying for church.

The Quote for August (in the Quotes section of the website) reminds us of the need to treat suggestions of divisiveness and discouragement regarding government and church in a Christianly scientific way. It assures us that we are not red or blue partisans, we don't live in the paradigm espoused by any media commentator. Nor are we victims of the old Chinese curse: "May you live in interesting times" (specifically a time when religion is supposedly either defined by human extremism or relegated to obscurity as irrelevant). As Paul said to his sceptical Athenian audience: "God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: For in him we live, and move, and have our being;" (Acts 17:24-28)

Enjoy the fruitage; be encouraged by it, inspired to share some of your own and most of all reminded that the fruits of our practice are not the results of human effort, but a natural effect of Life, Truth and Love recognized and cherished.

Dear People,Today is the start of the Advent season; a period, set aside by the traditional church, of spiritual preparation for celebrating the nativity of Jesus. The idea was that Christians should spend this month at the end of the year in expectant waiting, getting ready for the second coming of Christ while commemorating his first coming.

We are, perhaps, more familiar with this time of year as Black Friday - Cyber Monday. The coming period is daily proclaimed as so many shopping days left before Christmas (and the inevitable post-Christmas blow-out sales).

Christian Scientists do not engage in the ceremonies and rituals of the liturgical year. But that does not mean that these things don't occupy our hearts and minds. Christmas is a daily cherishing of the babe of spiritual healing, Easter is the morning meal with the risen Jesus that we make our everyday basis. Saint's days and feast days are the continual recognition that we live in the "communion of saints" - that we stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before and that we are not alone.

Likewise, Christian Scientists are not carried away by the ceremonies and rituals of the secular year because they are fully occupied with spiritual preparation all year. Our hearts and minds are not divided between two masters; we have one, God, good, and will bow to no other.

It is easy to lose sight, in the midst of worldly busy-ness, that our most important job is to find ourselves in the way the Master, Christ Jesus did; trusting God for all things, being "wise as serpents, and harmless as doves," "trying the spirits," and taking away the sins of the world. And yet we are daily confronted with the pressing need to engage more deeply, think more clearly, and love more freely, so that we can meet the spiritual demand of these times and not sleep-walk through life in the Adam-dream. This work begins in the closet of prayer but is by no means passive, nor, I think we are all beginning to realize, is it optional.

A friend recently likened Christian Science teaching to learning carpentry. If you want to learn wood-working you find out what the tools are and how to use them. You try them out under the supervision of someone who knows how they work and what they can do, and then you take them home.And, as with the tools you found and skills you learned during the two weeks of class instruction, once you're home with your hammer and screwdriver and saw, what are you going to do with them?

"Some people," he said, "put them up on a shelf and never take them out again. Others take them down once in awhile for an occasional job, if it seems easy, but tend to call a professional for most needs. Of course, there are those that actually use them on a regular basis and become pretty decent carpenters themselves."

The need for more consecrated and genuine Christian engagement has become obvious even to the casual observer. Mary Baker Eddy rightly declared, "This material world is even now becoming the arena for conflicting forces. On one side there will be discord and dismay; on the other side there will be Science and peace. The breaking up of material beliefs may seem to be famine and pestilence, want and woe, sin, sickness and death, which assume new phases until their nothingness appears... As this consummation draws nearer, he who has shaped his course in accordance with divine Science will endure to the end." (S&H pgs 96-97)

Mrs. Eddy also told us, that when confronted with Truth and with its own implicit nothingness, error would "scream, until its inarticulate sound is forever silenced in oblivion."

That scream is being heard in the social, civil, criminal, political and religious arenas today as mortal mind flails about trying to find truth in matter. There is no middle ground between Spirit and matter that we can occupy. For our own sakes and for the sake of the world, we need to be practicing "carpenters".

And so, this year, I am sending your Association Assignment early*. Let's celebrate the Advent together, get engaged and busy with spiritual preparation and bring in the coming new year with the new man and nothing less!with love,

Mary Baker Eddy suggested to her students that they spend 4 hours a day in prayer. This was her sense of what was required individually and to further the cause of Christian Science. Dear People,I am looking forward to our homecoming on May 22nd.Spring has arrived in Madison, and the budding flowers and trees speak of life renewed. Renewal is what we are all about. Mrs. Eddy wrote: "Our baptism is a purification from all error. Our church is built on the divine Principle, Love. We can unite with this church only as we are new‐born of Spirit, as we reach the Life which is Truth and the Truth which is Life by bringing forth the fruits of Love, — casting out error and healing the sick." (S&H 35:19-25) Association day is part of the natural expression of our God-given desire to be partakers of Truth and Love. It's our time to focus on what is most important to us.

Some years ago, a lecturer was invited to a Christian Science church to give an inspirational talk. The membership had requested she address them on the subject of animal magnetism. This, they all felt, was thwarting their progress as practicing Christian Scientists; they wanted to see more healing, more unity in church, more evidence of God's presence and power. These things were lacking; what else could explain it?

The speaker prepared the talk and sent out study citations. But when the time for the talk arrived and she stepped up to the podium before the congregation, she suddenly realized that something quite different was what was actually needed. She put away her notes and spoke for an hour on the meaning of prayer. She later explained that as she faced the audience, it had come to her that the only way to open the doorway to more healing, more unity in church and more evidence of God's presence and power, was to get back to the basics of prayer, as understood in Christian Science. If you had asked them before the talk if they knew what prayer was, all those attending would have said, "Of course!" But when they left that day, they all felt as if a veil had been lifted and that the way was much clearer and brighter. Enthusiastic testimonies on subsequent Wednesday evenings showed that prayer had come alive for this congregation.

A recent article in the New York Times on the direction of the Christian Science movement showed substantial confusion about the treatment of disease through prayer. But the confusion is not merely a case of journalistic errors. You could say that the writing indicates the influence of animal magnetism (as Robert Peel put it: that's the "hard fact that thinking rooted in material appearances has no intention of acknowledging a transcendent spiritual power that challenged its own legitimacy." - or, as Mrs. Eddy puts it: "a bland denial of truth"). But this seeming-influence can only be overcome through clarity about and demonstration of what it means to pray in Christian Science. Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures explains: "The question, What is Truth, is answered by demonstration, — by healing both disease and sin; and this demonstration shows that Christian healing confers the most health and makes the best men. On this basis Christian Science will have a fair fight." (S&H viii:12-16)

Looking back over the past century of articles on prayer and treatment in the Christian Science periodicals, one finds conflicting explanations of these terms. But Mary Baker Eddy's writings are remarkably clear on the subject. Looking deeply into what our Leader has to say about scientific prayer and the way it treats "all the ills that flesh is heir to," the "how-to" of prayer comes into focus. As we said on the first day of class, "Christian Scientists are the people whose God is All-in-all;" our prayer begins and ends with God.

The assignment (which was sent out in December) asked you to spend an hour of your day in prayer for yourself. Please share with us what your work on the assignment has uncovered and unfolded to you. Questions are most welcome as are accounts of difficulties you may have encountered as you took up the work. Of course, fruitage is always welcome!

We cannot bring out the practical proof of Christianity, which Jesus required, while error seems as potent and real to us as Truth, and while we make a personal devil and an anthropomorphic God our starting-points, — especially if we consider Satan as a being coequal in power with Deity, if not superior to Him.

"Thou shalt have no other gods before me." (Exodus xx. 3.) The First Commandment is my favorite text. It demonstrates Christian Science. It inculcates the tri-unity of God, Spirit, Mind; it signifies that man shall have no other spirit or mind but God, eternal good, and that all men shall have one Mind. The divine Principle of the First Commandment bases the Science of being, by which man demonstrates health, holiness, and life eternal. One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, "Love thy neighbor as thyself;" annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry, — whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes; annuls the curse on man, and leaves nothing that can sin, suffer, be punished or destroyed.

This testimony of Holy Writ sustains the fact in Science, that the heavens and earth to one human consciousness, that consciousness which God bestows, are spiritual, while to another, the unillumined human mind, the vision is material. This shows unmistakably that what the human mind terms matter and spirit indicates states and stages of consciousness.

SH 573:13Accompanying this scientific consciousness was another revelation, even the declaration from heaven, supreme harmony, that God, the divine Principle of harmony, is ever with men, and they are His people. Thus man was no longer regarded as a miserable sinner, but as the blessed child of God. Why? Because St. John's corporeal sense of the heavens and earth had vanished, and in place of this false sense was the spiritual sense, the subjective state by which he could see the new heaven and new earth, which involve the spiritual idea and consciousness of reality. This is Scriptural authority for concluding that such a recognition of being is, and has been, possible to men in this present state of existence, — that we can become conscious, here and now, of a cessation of death, sorrow, and pain. This is indeed a foretaste of absolute Christian Science. Take heart, dear sufferer, for this reality of being will surely appear sometime and in some way. There will be no more pain, and all tears will be wiped away. When you read this, remember Jesus' words, "The kingdom of God is within you." This spiritual consciousness is therefore a present possibility.

Matt 18:1-4At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. SH 476:29-32 TheThe kingdom of God is within you;" that is, Truth and Love reign in the real man, showing that man in God's image is unfallen and eternal.

SH 533:26Truth, cross-questioning man as to his knowledge of error, finds woman the first to confess her fault. She says, "The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat;" as much as to say in meek penitence, "Neither man nor God shall father my fault." She has already learned that corporeal sense is the serpent. Hence she is first to abandon the belief in the material origin of man and to discern spiritual creation. This hereafter enabled woman to be the mother of Jesus and to behold at the sepulchre the risen Saviour, who was soon to manifest the deathless man of God's creating. This enabled woman to be first to interpret the Scriptures in their true sense, which reveals the spiritual origin of man.

SH 517:10 InIn divine Science, we have not as much authority for considering God masculine, as we have for considering Him feminine, for Love imparts the clearest idea of Deity.

SH 565:13-15 (to ,)The impersonation of the spiritual idea had a brief history in the earthly life of our Master; but "of his kingdom there shall be no end,

Who would stand before a blackboard, and pray the principle of mathematics to solve the problem?

SH 1:6Prayer, watching, and working, combined with self-immolation, are God's gracious means for accomplishing whatever has been successfully done for the Christianization and health of mankind.

Mis 8:9-21Who is thine enemy that thou shouldst love him? Is it a creature or a thing outside thine own creation?

Can you see an enemy, except you first formulate this enemy and then look upon the object of your own conception? What is it that harms you? Can height, or depth, or any other creature separate you from the Love that is omnipresent good, — that blesses infinitely one and all?

Simply count your enemy to be that which defiles, defaces, and dethrones the Christ-image that you should reflect. Whatever purifies, sanctifies, and consecrates human life, is not an enemy, however much we suffer in the process.

SH 362:1-364:31It is related in the seventh chapter of Luke's Gospel that Jesus was once the honored guest of a certain Pharisee, by name Simon, though he was quite unlike Simon the disciple. While they were at meat, an unusual incident occurred, as if to interrupt the scene of Oriental festivity. A "strange woman" came in. Heedless of the fact that she was debarred from such a place and such society, especially under the stern rules of rabbinical law, as positively as if she were a Hindoo pariah intruding upon the household of a high-caste Brahman, this woman (Mary Magdalene, as she has since been called) approached Jesus. According to the custom of those days, he reclined on a couch with his head towards the table and his bare feet away from it. It was therefore easy for the Magdalen to come behind the couch and reach his feet. She bore an alabaster jar containing costly and fragrant oil, — sandal oil perhaps, which is in such common use in the East. Breaking the sealed jar, she perfumed Jesus' feet with the oil, wiping them with her long hair, which hung loosely about her shoulders, as was customary with women of her grade.

Did Jesus spurn the woman? Did he repel her adoration? No! He regarded her compassionately. Nor was this all. Knowing what those around him were saying in their hearts, especially his host, — that they were wondering why, being a prophet, the exalted guest did not at once detect the woman's immoral status and bid her depart, — knowing this, Jesus rebuked them with a short story or parable. He described two debtors, one for a large sum and one for a smaller, who were released from their obligations by their common creditor. "Which of them will love him most?" was the Master's question to Simon the Pharisee; and Simon replied, "He to whom he forgave most." Jesus approved the answer, and so brought home the lesson to all, following it with that remarkable declaration to the woman, "Thy sins are forgiven."

Why did he thus summarize her debt to divine Love? Had she repented and reformed, and did his insight detect this unspoken moral uprising? She bathed his feet with her tears before she anointed them with the oil. In the absence of other proofs, was her grief sufficient evidence to warrant the expectation of her repentance, reformation, and growth in wisdom? Certainly there was encouragement in the mere fact that she was showing her affection for a man of undoubted goodness and purity, who has since been rightfully regarded as the best man that ever trod this planet. Her reverence was unfeigned, and it was manifested towards one who was soon, though they knew it not, to lay down his mortal existence in behalf of all sinners, that through his word and works they might be redeemed from sensuality and sin.

Which was the higher tribute to such ineffable affection, the hospitality of the Pharisee or the contrition of the Magdalen? This query Jesus answered by rebuking self-righteousness and declaring the absolution of the penitent. He even said that this poor woman had done what his rich entertainer had neglected to do, — wash and anoint his guest's feet, a special sign of Oriental courtesy.

Here is suggested a solemn question, a question indicated by one of the needs of this age. Do Christian Scientists seek Truth as Simon sought the Saviour, through material conservatism and for personal homage? Jesus told Simon that such seekers as he gave small reward in return for the spiritual purgation which came through the Messiah. If Christian Scientists are like Simon, then it must be said of them also that they love little.

On the other hand, do they show their regard for Truth, or Christ, by their genuine repentance, by their broken hearts, expressed by meekness and human affection, as did this woman? If so, then it may be said of them, as Jesus said of the unwelcome visitor, that they indeed love much, because much is forgiven them.

SH 17:6-7 And (to ;)And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And Love is reflected in love;

SH 4:3-5,12-16What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds.

The habitual struggle to be always good is unceasing prayer. Its motives are made manifest in the blessings they bring, — blessings which, even if not acknowledged in audible words, attest our worthiness to be partakers of Love.

Mis 336:1-4Mind is supreme: Love is the master of hate; Truth, the victor over a lie. Hath not Science voiced this lesson to you, — that evil is powerless, that a lie is never true?

If indulged, it masters us; brings suffering upon suffering to its possessor, throughout time and beyond the grave. If you have been badly wronged, forgive and forget: God will recompense this wrong, and punish, more severely than you could, him who has striven to injure you. Never return evil for evil; and, above all, do not fancy that you have been wronged when you have not been.

Mis. 13:1The only justice of which I feel at present capable, is mercy and charity toward every one, — just so far as one and all permit me to exercise these sentiments toward them, — taking special care to mind my own business.

Mis. 12:28We should measure our love for God by our love for man; and our sense of Science will be measured by our obedience to God, — fulfilling the law of Love, doing good to all; imparting, so far as we reflect them, Truth, Life, and Love to all within the radius of our atmosphere of thought.

Prayer and Treatment ("And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil")

Mis. 218:11It is erroneous to accept the evidence of the material senses whence to reason out God, when it is conceded that the five personal senses can take no cognizance of Spirit or of its phenomena. False realistic views sap the Science of Principle and idea; they make Deity unreal and inconceivable, either as mind or matter; but Truth comes to the rescue of reason and immortality, and unfolds the real nature of God and the universe to the spiritual sense, which beareth witness of things spiritual, and not material.

SH 102:16-23The mild forms of animal magnetism are disappearing, and its aggressive features are coming to the front. The looms of crime, hidden in the dark recesses of mortal thought, are every hour weaving webs more complicated and subtle. So secret are the present methods of animal magnetism that they ensnare the age into indolence, and produce the very apathy on the subject which the criminal desires.

SH 9:25-6Are you willing to leave all for Christ, for Truth, and so be counted among sinners? No! Do you really desire to attain this point? No! Then why make long prayers about it and ask to be Christians, since you do not care to tread in the footsteps of our dear Master? If unwilling to follow his example, why pray with the lips that you may be partakers of his nature? Consistent prayer is the desire to do right. Prayer means that we desire to walk and will walk in the light so far as we receive it, even though with bleeding footsteps, and that waiting patiently on the Lord, we will leave our real desires to be rewarded by Him.

The world must grow to the spiritual understanding of prayer.

SH 458:20-24,25 TheSin makes deadly thrusts at the Christian Scientist as ritualism and creed are summoned to give place to higher law, but Science will ameliorate mortal malice. The Christianly scientific man reflects the divine law, thus becoming a law unto himself.

The Christian Scientist wisely shapes his course, and is honest and consistent in following the leadings of divine Mind. He must prove, through living as well as healing and teaching, that Christ's way is the only one by which mortals are radically saved from sin and sickness.

SH 17:8-11 And (to .)And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; And God leadeth us not into temptation, but delivereth us from sin, disease, and death.

Ps. 20:6-7Now know I that the Lord saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.

SH 458:11It is anything but scientifically Christian to think of aiding the divine Principle of healing or of trying to sustain the human body until the divine Mind is ready to take the case. Divinity is always ready. Semper paratus is Truth's motto. Having seen so much suffering from quackery, the author desires to keep it out of Christian Science. The two-edged sword of Truth must turn in every direction to guard "the tree of life."

S&H 225:25The despotic tendencies, inherent in mortal mind and always germinating in new forms of tyranny, must be rooted out through the action of the divine Mind.

SH 108:30My discovery, that erring, mortal, misnamed mind produces all the organism and action of the mortal body, set my thoughts to work in new channels, and led up to my demonstration of the proposition that Mind is All and matter is naught as the leading factor in Mind-science.

SH 458:1Mental quackery rests on the same platform as all other quackery. The chief plank in this platform is the doctrine that Science has two principles in partnership, one good and the other evil, — one spiritual, the other material, — and that these two may be simultaneously at work on the sick. This theory is supposed to favor practice from both a mental and a material standpoint. Another plank in the platform is this, that error will finally have the same effect as truth.

S&H 185:26Erroneous mental practice may seem for a time to benefit the sick, but the recovery is not permanent. This is because erroneous methods act on and through the material stratum of the human mind, called brain, which is but a mortal consolidation of material mentality and its suppositional activities.

S&H 233:17-22Ye who can discern the face of the sky, — the sign material, — how much more should ye discern the sign mental, and compass the destruction of sin and sickness by overcoming the thoughts which produce them, and by understanding the spiritual idea which corrects and destroys them.

S&H 414:25Hold these points strongly in view. Keep in mind the verity of being, — that man is the image and likeness of God, in whom all being is painless and permanent. Remember that man's perfection is real and unimpeachable, whereas imperfection is blameworthy, unreal, and is not brought about by divine Love.

SH 502:24-27The infinite has no beginning. This word beginning is employed to signify the only, — that is, the eternal verity and unity of God and man, including the universe.

SH 565:13The impersonation of the spiritual idea had a brief history in the earthly life of our Master; but "of his kingdom there shall be no end," for Christ, God's idea, will eventually rule all nations and peoples — imperatively, absolutely, finally — with divine Science. This immaculate idea, represented first by man and, according to the Revelator, last by woman, will baptize with fire; and the fiery baptism will burn up the chaff of error with the fervent heat of Truth and Love, melting and purifying even the gold of human character. After the stars sang together and all was primeval harmony, the material lie made war upon the spiritual idea; but this only impelled the idea to rise to the zenith of demonstration, destroying sin, sickness, and death, and to be caught up unto God, — to be found in its divine Principle.

SH 496:9We all must learn that Life is God. Ask yourself: Am I living the life that approaches the supreme good? Am I demonstrating the healing power of Truth and Love? If so, then the way will grow brighter "unto the perfect day." Your fruits will prove what the understanding of God brings to man. Hold perpetually this thought, — that it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, and encompassing all true being.
